Smart home battery storage

A smart battery stores electricity — from the grid or from solar — and decides when your home should use it. It can keep essential circuits running during an outage and shift when you draw power from the grid. It is often the first step toward a more energy-independent home, with or without solar.

  • Backup power for essential circuits
  • Store grid or solar energy
  • Smarter use of time-of-use rates

What a smart battery can do

Energy storage

Holds electricity for later use, measured in usable kilowatt-hours (kWh).

Backup power

With a backup gateway or transfer switch, supplies selected circuits — or in some designs the whole home — when the grid goes down.

Time-of-use optimization

Charges during lower-priced periods and discharges during higher-priced periods, where your rate plan makes that worthwhile.

Solar integration

Stores daytime solar production for evenings instead of exporting it.

Home energy management

Works with monitoring and load controls to coordinate heat pumps, EV chargers and other large loads.

Electrical considerations

Rates and savings

Electricity rate plans, prices and time periods are set by your utility and the Ontario Energy Board and change over time. We use your actual bills and current published rates when modelling a system — we do not assume savings.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need solar to get a home battery?

No. A battery can charge from the grid and provide backup power and rate optimization on its own. Solar can be added later if compatible equipment is chosen.

How long will a battery power my home?

It depends on usable capacity and what is connected. Essential circuits can run far longer than a whole home. We estimate runtime from your actual loads.
