How home batteries work
A home battery system is more than a battery. It combines storage modules, an inverter, a way to isolate your home from the grid during outages and software that decides when to charge and discharge.

Battery modules
Store energy as DC electricity. Most modern home batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) or similar lithium chemistries.
Inverter
Converts DC to the AC power your home uses. Some batteries include one; others share a hybrid inverter with solar.
Backup gateway or transfer switch
Disconnects your home from the grid during an outage so the battery can safely power it.
Controls and software
Set charging schedules, backup reserve levels and priorities, often through an app.
A typical day
- Overnight: charges from the grid during lower-priced hours (if your plan has them)
- Daytime: charges from solar if installed
- Peak period: supplies the home to reduce grid purchases
- Always: holds a reserve for outages
