Time-of-use optimization
Ontario residential customers can typically choose between rate plans with different prices by time of day. A battery can charge when electricity is cheaper and supply the home when it is more expensive.

How it works
Time-of-use
Prices differ between off-peak, mid-peak and on-peak periods.
Ultra-low overnight
Some plans offer a very low overnight price with a higher on-peak price. A battery can charge overnight and cover the expensive window.
Tiered
Price depends on how much you use. Shifting time of use has little effect on this plan.
What determines the value
- Price difference between periods on your plan
- How much of your usage falls in high-price periods
- Battery capacity and round-trip efficiency
- Whether an EV or heat pump adds overnight load
Current rates
Electricity rate plans, prices and time periods are set by your utility and the Ontario Energy Board and change over time. We use your actual bills and current published rates when modelling a system — we do not assume savings.
